|Earlier this month the social media network Facebook announced that it had hit the magic plateau of one billion monthly active users, the first social network to do so.
It's an epic milestone for Facebook and one that comes with a lot of opportunity. As Facebook continues to try and find a way to monetize its huge audience (and also turn around its plunging stock price), its users are liking, friending and marketing millions of products, services, brands and companies through word of mouth. The business that can be generated by grabbing the attention of some of those hundreds of millions of users is substantial.
I wanted to recognize Facebook's billion user milestone by compiling the latest information about what's popular on Facebook, from brands to celebrities to countries and how businesses are using it. Here is the result of our effort, a new infographic showing what some of those billion Facebook users are liking on the network:
Some of the information that I dug up about what's really popular on Facebook was surprising:
- For instance, I wouldn't have guessed that Converse could have been the third-most popular brand on Facebook, nor would I have guessed that Brazil was the second-most popular nation to be plugged in to the network. (But that likely won't be for long as India looks likely to surpass them in the next few months.)
- Big brands may have the marketing budget to create a lot of content on Facebook, and that gets them millions of fans, but what about the smaller companies looking to find a way to build their brands? Actually, the evidence that I've found shows that small biz is using social media/Facebook more effectively.
- I believe that there is more return on investment happening for small business using social media thanks to better marketing tools (that engage fans on Facebook pages), better strategy by the person responsible for maintaining the company's Facebook page, and better knowledge out there about how to create those social media strategies.
- The bottom portion of our infographic is especially of interest to anyone that owns a small business and is already on Facebook, or if you're considering jumping into the water.
